I'm so sick of a neighbor's bass. What recourse?

As a proud owner of such, I have had occasion to deal with this situation myself.

My advice would be to ignore the noise ordinance enforcement. The laws are usually written too exacting to be easily enforced. Call the police with a “disturbing the peace” complaint. That is usually a lot more subjective making it easier for the responding officer to act.

Or so I’ve been told.

But do you know how many time zones there are in the Soviet Union?

No, I never really studied that up.

A while back…OK 15 years ago or so, I was in a rock band with my brother. We used to practice in the garage. We had converted the garage into a practice space complete with loads of sound proofing. I had a Db meter and used to check the levels outside that garage regularly to see how loud we were (in the 70 - 80 decibel range outside under the neighbor’s window. Didn’t ever get to take levels inside his house though I suppose he would have let us if we asked. He wasn’t mean about it, just couldn’t sleep if he could hear it.)

Still…the neighbor called the cops. If he could hear the music at all, he called the cops, every time. He’d try and call the house first but if no one answered (we were all out in the garage practicing) he’d call the cops. They always came and even though the noise level wasn’t excessive and it wasn’t late at night, the cops always told us we had to stop.

It didn’t really matter what the ordinence said, what mattered was that the neighbor was complaining. After coming out several times in a couple of weeks the cop told us that if we didn’t stop practicing there someone would be arrested. (we ended up borrowing a warehouse space from a friend for rehearsals. Industrial area, no noise complaints ever)

What I’m saying is call the cops and keep calling. Every day if you have to, until they get the message. When the cops tire of coming out they’ll come down on them, not you (hopefully). Good luck.

The way I read that, someone wouldn’t be able to mow their lawn, as I’ve never seen a mower that couldn’t be heard at 50 feet.

Clarification: open flames are legal as long as they’re kept a certain distance from the building, a distance which is greater than the size of most balconies. There is no distance requirement for electric grills, which have no open flame.

I use an electric smoker on our balcony but I always set up a fan to blow the smoke away from the building.

Tell them to keep that fish on a leash.

I thought it said boss; I was picturing the neighbor being so upset with his boss that the ranting was keeping Only Mostly Dead awake.
