Check out this thread over on Topix. There are several people going through exactly the same thing and some of the posters have experience and suggestions to help you get through withdrawals and quitting methadone successfully.

Good luck! Seriously… It’s the worst drug to get off of.

Do NOT use a muscle relaxer (like baclofen) in place of an opioid.

Seek out a specialist in addiction medicine and let them help you come off of methadone. There are a variety of methods available, and I’ve prescribed a number of them for my patients in the past. It can be done safely and with a minimum of withdrawal symptoms.

Tried to edit my previous post but waited too long. Just wanted to add this. Lots of tips on how to taper, how to stay hydrated, what to use to help with diarrhea, etc. Look for posts made by ABC 52 and start with the last page and work your way back. There are over 40,000 posts…

Welcome to the SDMB, damagedgoods, Despite our name, we’re not actually only about drugs here – though we do have some knowledgeable people available. (Qadgop the Mercotan is a physician in a prison and has a great deal of experience dealing with people who are struggling with addicition.)

I have moved your thread to IMHO, which is where we deal with medical advice and experiences.

Hope you find some useful information here!

Just to clarify, I’m an MD who practices family medicine, addiction medicine, and Corrections Medicine, most of which currently happens at my office in a prison. I don’t live in the prison, I just work there.

Prior to working in corrections medicine, I did 15 years of family medicine and addiction medicine in the community. Frankly, it’s safer working in a prison than in a lot of urban clinics and hospitals.

Good luck to you, damagedgoods, although I truly wish you wouldn’t think of yourself that way. Please don’t try to manage the withdrawal all by yourself. If you can’t find help near where you are, let us know - as much as you feel comfortable - what general area you’re in and somebody will probably try to help research some options.

Thanx every one 4 info-btw,stopped the musle relaxers & I am under Doc.s care, she’s just full of shit.Been on about 7 differ. done’ clinic’s-now a pain “specialist”.I do have pain prob.s cuz i suffer from N.f#1,i just don’t want ta be on this fuckin poisen anymore, but thanks 4 the offer of support groups/Doctors!Live in chicago area tho to answer a query.(used to anyhow, now I 70 miles from my beloved city in the fuk’n stix.We do have a gas station tho.(And about 16 bars-in a county seat of 12k)Blah,Blah,blah-I do tend to rant don’t I? Sorry!

Lots of folks in 12 step programs here. I have been clean 25 years in NA. Lots of people there know how it feels and how hard it is, because they were there.

I don’t need reply’s REguarding anything to do w/N.A.,but thank you,I obviously, being drug user for 32 yrs,25 on opioids I done my time in the rooms, sorry but i think most of the programs just don’t work w/me(yeah,i know, thousands of people have cleaned up in NAH.-I don’t dig the chanting’s(we) and it’s Bullshit the claim NAH’s not a religous program. But i won’t debate NAH. cuz I’ll piss some people off,and I don’t want newcomers who can get help to say "Yeah! That’s true,or hmmm, I never thought of that.I really just wanna detox MYSELF from 'done.Did good job thus far(100mg.s to current 20,22ishmgs.)I know it,s a small dose but I don’t want to start sticking “deadly pins” in my arm (kudos there to Sabbath’s hand of doom)cuz doc don’t script me anymore & I’m out of my contignancy stash of the ‘sript.I might also have harder time(no med. testing done tho)cumin’ down because of my diagnosis of neurofibromatosis#1(central nervous system disorder)Anyhow,again-I have zero thoughts of “copping” and I see no reason to spend rest of my life talking & thinking about drugs now that i’m sober(yes N.A.ers not clean,sober-let’s not all play symantics)also NAH. is moot to me as i don’t subsribe to the dis-ease theory, but as I said-let’s not go there:dubious::dubious:

What is that drug that I’ve heard that apparently eradicates almost all opioid withdrawal symptoms? Subutex or something like that? I think I read about it in a book by Artie Lange.

Yes,It’s subutex,or more commonly known as suboxone, however I can’t take that cuz a person must be off opiods for 72 hrs(or at least 48)or they’ll get dope sick cuz the drug has both an antaginist and an anti-antaganist in it,w/meth,people have been weell known for using meth as a “just in case” they can’t cop any dope that day(or just don’t wanna go out and husltle)also,if i gonna be sick for 3 day no way in hell would i substitute a substatute for a substatute

Yeah, Artie’s a real expert on safe use of opioids.

not.

Sounds like the OP’s been around the block a few times as is, as he has strong opinions about will and won’t work for him.

OP, if you’ve made it from 100/day of methadone down to 20/day already, and have been tossed out of your pain/opioid maintenance programs, there’s probably nothing for it but to taper down to zero and just feel shitty until withdrawal is over.

To much info to give so a lots been left out, still got pain doc, she’s feeding me scripts for 50 a day till she gets to zero on her 10mg a month plan.Thats why the contingincy plan i spoke of

Well, it made me laugh.

Pain is inevitable. It’s the suffering that’s optional.

Why would baclofen help opiate withdrawal?

It causes sedation, so helps to blunt the overall discomfort of withdrawal symptoms by making one groggy. It also reduces muscle spasticity and twitching, and so reduces that side-effect of withdrawal also.

It also just makes you ‘feel different’ which is important for a lot of addicts.
