Everybody’s been raving about this fairly new title, and I’m contemplating picking up the first few issues, but damn they’s expensive.
Is it worth laying out the jack for the back-issues? Should I wait for a trade paperback? Is it a limited series or an ongoing?
Thoughts?
I just checked out e-bay, and they’re going for a bit of a premium, at about $20.00 for the first four issues, which is a bit of a markup (I pre-subscribed and paid a little over $2.00 each through a subscription service).
It’s damn good. Not quite the same quality as Y: The Last Man or Fables, but very good nonetheless. The artwork is very nice. It’s in black and white, but it isn’t just line work without the color (like, say Mythstalkers after issue #5), the half-tones are excellent and the line work itself is quite convincing at creating a real-world type atmosphere.
The story is standard zombie fare, but very well done. The beginning is quite similar to 28 days later, but that’s the only similarity. The main character, and all of the others for that matter, behave somewhat like real people rather than people in a horror movie. There aren’t any superheroes here or unrealistically portrayed women, just some ordinary people a desperate situation.
That depends upon how important it is to you to have individual issues. I’d be willing to part with the $20 that these are going for if I didn’t already have them, but I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to having comlete runs.
The first tpb comes out in April(scroll down to the first reccomendation for a short review) , and it includes the first five issues, at about the same time as the fifth issue is scheduled for, so you can get completely up to date. It’s budget priced, too, retailing for $10, less than cover price for the original issues.
It’s ongoing. Kirkman said on one letter column that as long as there are sales to support it, he plans to be with the book for the next few years.
