Importing music on a DVD into iTunes

Lemme start with the disclaimers. I OWN this DVD. It is Neil Young’s Greatest Hits. I paid cash for it. NO pirating, etc going on here. Firm case law allows me to duplicate it into my iTunes for private use.

So. Here’s the question. I can import a CD with zero problems. However, the music is not visible to me since it’s DVD of Neil Young’s music. Now, he’s a smart fellow and I am wondering if very specifically this is NOT a music CD to prevent what I am trying to do- copy it into my computer.

Is there a legal way for me to import it into my own Mac?

I had not heard about this, but a quick search turned this up on Wikipedia:

Neil is so out there as an audiophile, he brought his own digital music player to market because he thought MP3s sucked eggs.

It looks like he uses a DVD because the digital audio supports higher resolution and bit rate than the 40 year old CD audio standard.

I’m not sure if it’s easily ripable, you may have to pull the .mp4 format and then convert it.

IANAL but I believe you are allowed to copy CDs to your computer because they do not have DRM. I think all commercial DVDs have DRM, and it’s illegal to circumvent the DRM.

I know how I would do it but it involves ripping the DVD.

Yeah. My bad then, cause I don’t download or use any software involved in pirating.

Damn. I’ll have to find a copy of “Decade”…

It looks like DVD Audio Extractor will do what you want. It seems to be a legit program as far as I can tell. Available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

Is it lost in your house somewhere? I’ve always heard that a Man Needs a Maid…

So are these simple audio tracks of a normal DVD video, or is there some special DVD audio-only format that it uses?

(What does the video show?)
