Impossible short film ID

I went to a couple of screenings (George Romero’s Knightriders and Wolfgang Petersen’s Das Boot, and possibly Eating Raoul; though the last may have been elsewhere) at Filmex in 1982. Before the main events, short films were shown. One of them was called The Maze. If I recall correctly, it was in black and white and featured a giant frog or toad.

The other one I remember had to do with a boy who was having a birthday party. I don’t remember the situation, but nobody showed up. The doorbell rings (or there is a knock) and the boy answers it. Outside is a clown that had been hired for the entertainment. The clown looks into the empty house and says, ‘Well, happy birthday, Mister Popular.’

Anyone know what that film may have been called?

AFIFest absorbed Filmex, and as of 2010, they had a link on one of their pages to a historical database of all the films shown.

The link didn’t work any more, so I contacted the company that hosted it and they said AFI discontinued using them.

The database may still exist. The name of the company is Baseline, and their main product is called Studiosystem. Maybe you know someone who subscribes?
