impounded vehicle

My car was recently impounded from in front of my house. That’s a yarn I won’t spin right now… so here’s my question:

If I was going to get rid of the car anyway (as in give it away, or have it scrapped) what would happen if I just let the police keep it? I know it will be sold at auction, but will I amass some monstrous amount of fines? Will the Towing company sue me for storage fees?

Your impounded car is running up storage fees day by day, and will continue to do so until auctioned off. If the auctioned price doesn’t cover the storage fees, then you’ll be on the hook.

Better to get it out of impound quickly. Believe me, I’ve been there, done that.

I concur with Hermann. I had a vehicle that I, umm, stored on a large military base parking lot for some time. After sitting there peacefully for some three years, I received a call from the base police telling me that I had 24 hours to remove it, or it would be towed and impounded. Unfortunately, it had no valid plates or insurance by this time, nor was it particularly mobile.

I asked the police the same question the OP did: if it was towed away, would I be off the hook? I was told that the towing was contracted out to a private firm. The firm would rack up huge fees for towing and impoundment, and that they would indeed sue me. This was all part of the routine for them.

I immediately called a junkyard and asked them if they wanted a 1985 Mazda GLC, free, provided they show up with a tow truck pronto. The car was gone two hours later.
