So last semester I took a couple ASL classes. I met some really cool people, got some fairly deceint grades and, overall, really got into signing.
Now the semester is over and I’ve moved back home where I know absolutely NOBODY in the deaf community. I’ve done some searching on google and yahoo yellow pages and found a handful of groups and events this summer but none of them really seem accessible to me. For instance:
-There is a deaf church a couple towns over but I’m not very religious at all.
-While seeing a captioned movie would be entertaining…a dark theatre is not exactly the best place to meet people, especially using a completely visual language.
-I’ve found one or two silent dinners but I get the impression that I would be imposing if I were to attend.
Any thoughts?
While I’m on the subject, are there any dopers out there actively involved in the deaf community?
