Not really a definitive answer, but probably as good as we’re getting at the moment.
I saw that yesterday. It pretty much rules out rhyming slang, and points to American origin. The first recorded usage was in North America in 1847. No information on where the phrase came from.
What kind of tie does a pig wear? My evil dad never had an answer to that one, either. I asked him that question after he yelled at me to clean up my room, and he said my room looked like one.
I hope to go to the Tipton Pork Festival next week, and maybe I can get an answer there.
