I’ve been hearing this phrase in local sportscasts recently, but not with enough context to figure out what they’re talking about. Does anyone know what a “hot stove” refers to?

It refers to the off-season. Back before television and other professional sports leagues, the men had nothing better to do in the winter offseason than to sit around a hot stove and discuss the moves the teams were making and should be making in preparation for the upcoming season.
