Same here!
Equipoise has recommended The Guard half a dozen times and I still haven’t watched it…I suppose I should do something about that.

Yes, you should really watch The Guard. Gleeson and Don Cheadle are both very good. It has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
I was in the minority who did not like it. However, Calvary(also by In Bruges director’s brother) is amazing and probably one of the top movies of 2014(or 2013 if it came out then).
I also recommend Seven Psychopaths, which is from In Bruges director and stars Colin Ferrell, Woody Harrellson, and Christopher Walken. And many others. It’s not quite as good as In Bruges, but watch it and then re-watch it a few months later. It’s also amazing.
I thought the Guard was a pile of shite and couldn’t understand the love for it both here and internationally. It was amateurish and flat as 20 day old open soda.
Agreed
I dunno, I think I could watch Gleeson dryly taking the piss out of everybody in sight pretty much forever.
There’s an aspect of The Guard that resembles an Irish children’s fantasy series I’ve read. It’s a lot like the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. The Artemis Fowl series are fantasies where the characters (fairies, elves, pixies, etc.) talk like they’re in an American action movie. There’s supposed to be something ridiculous about elves, etc. talking like American action heroes. Colfer actually calls the series “Die Hard with fairies.” The same is true in The Guard. An American FBI agent has come to Ireland to hunt down drug dealers. The film is not supposed to be a straight action movie but one where one character finds the tropes of the action movie to be laughable.
Yes, *The Guard *has a wry self-awareness of buddy-cop movie tropes that I found very funny (similar to Hot Fuzz in that way). See it and judge for yourself, Maserschmidt.
I’m dittoing this. Gleeson’s performance is the only thing that pulls it (barely) out of the mire.
Also not a fan of Calvary, which has none of the humor of In Bruges. The movie is unrelentingly grim. Maybe if you are a fan of Lars Trier you would like it. I am not.
I came in to see if anybody else didn’t like it. Guess it’s just me.
I like British comedies a lot, too, but I was just bored and annoyed by this one. Oh well!
Whoa, it’s nowhere near as grim as Trier. It’s just a more serious drama than some movies.
