I would recommend you sell the car,and don’t get another one until you can afford to keep it legal. Tell the judge that you have realized how irresponsible all this was, that you were just trying to get to school/keep your job/see your kid, and you did something desperate and stupid.

I feel like this would be somewhat hard to buy in New York City. There’s tons of places in the U.S. where you can’t reasonably get around without a car, but NYC isn’t one of them. Were I a judge, I would not be inclined to be lenient after that explanation.
