In defence of Russia

I’m not talking about that source (or any source) at all. I’m talking about you, and how all of your participation in the Ukraine thread looks exactly like you are “spinning at high RPM to favor Russian side of the situation.”

You behave exactly like a Russian propagandist. Like, dictionary definition worthy.

WTF is a “possible fact”?

“Let’s float it and see if anyone bites.”

Oh, I’m sorry- Did Ukraine invade some country?
Slaughter the people there, blow shit up?

Isn’t that a Roger Waters song from Pink Floyd’s 1983 album The Final Cut?

Good point. One that I always have in mind. Facts are defined within our ability to narrow them down to reality with ever better precision. Ideally it is through the scientific method. But facts are not all so nicely able to fit into that kind of controlled experimental box.
The “Facts” we are all getting on this issue are controlled tightly by some outlets, but also completely uncontrolled by other outlets. None of us has assured access to the real core facts. Any one of us can try and interpret what “Facts” we can get. Then go forward and interact with others to discuss the facts we have derived. I prefer to present what I think are the facts and get some good feedback. Unfortunately, Fuck You Troll, does not provide useful feedback for me to enhance my calculation of facts. But it does enhance my calculation of the feedback in general. Excepting some good thoughts from some people, that does cause me to reassess what I think my facts presented to me.

Sounds complicated. I just look to see which country did the invading, and BOOM!

Yep. Russia invaded. Agree.
Before, during and after. Damn complicated.

Well, we don’t really have an “after” yet. But with regards to your struggle with the credibility of news sources, we have the same thing in my country. An epidemic of people who couldn’t tell fake from real if their lives depended on it. It’s a sad thing, and it got us Donald Motherfucking Trump as acting president.

I think that’s a clumsy way to describe an “unverified claim”. But I also think it highlights the credulity at play here. Nothing should be considered a fact at all unless it’s coming from a reliable source or you have empirical evidence.

I can’t blame the people for having trouble figuring out what is real and, I won’t even say fake, but opportune? I see what I consider reputable, mainstream sources messing up. Of course it has always happened, with no bad intent. But lately things from what I assumed to be solid to flaky seem to swap places so randomly in credibility. I used to be able to take a very reasonable amount of time to peruse a few sources and feel I had a pretty good grip on what the facts are. Now, I feel I could spend 16 hours a day trying to get even a slim account of the real facts.

If you’re being sincere and you aren’t full of it, please explain what reputable mainstream source you see messing up. Not in a vague sense, but with a link. And how did they mess up.

Because you’ve repeatedly cited actual state-run Russian propaganda sources in the past, and kooky conspiracy pages. What to you is reliable?

If we assume you are posting in good faith, it kind of feels like we’re talking about fashion and interior design with someone who is badly colorblind. Or just has a fetish for clashing colors.

Weapons of mass destruction.
Clinton will win easily.
No Covid lab leak,
Trump is Russian agent.
Russia will not invade Ukraine.

The news system is not infallible. They seldom speak in complete unison. These facts do not mean it is useless or all fake. Just needs to be parsed out carefully.

So vague insinuations, no actual citations. That’s what I expected. And you’re reaching back decades.

You can’t back up anything you say because you have nothing. All you can do is throw out your screed. And you wonder why people aren’t engaging with you meaningfully.

I’ll give you this much. I don’t think you’re a troll or paid Russian provocateur. You’re just a regular, boring conspiracy theorist. Just another low information cautionary tale.

I checked out all your posts on this subject. Did not take long.

At this point, why bother?

Deliberate troll or useful idiot. After several hundred posts, it’s just tiresome and pointless.

Worse, methinks at the one year anniversary of the invasion, some of the earlier posts about relative Russian advantages, tactics, etc are going to age even more poorly.

Too bad. You can cry or you can laugh. You’re fucked either way, might was well laugh.

War is deadly, terrifyingly serious, and completely fucking comical. If you honestly thought about what war means and didn’t laugh some at the idea, you’d be completely fucking out of your mind. It’s too stupid and horrible to believe, even in ancient times. It’s only become more so as time as progressed, and at this point we all somewhat teeter on nuclear oblivion based on who invades/attacks/threatens who – sometimes based on the whim of an idiot. If that’s not perfectly clear, I would rank several US Presidents as idiots, and we’re often lucky things didn’t go worse than they did. They weren’t the first idiots in charge (history is almost a litany of them), and with any luck, they won’t be the last.

I don’t have any more agency in that other than my vote, my speech and whatever cash I can muster to help the folks who I think are doing the needful. Hey, it’s more than a lot of people have! Nonetheless, sometimes it’s my own government I’m afraid of doing the stupid shit, and sometimes they go ahead and do it. I’m fucked either way, might as well laugh while I work against it.

Try as I might, I cannot remember one moment, one instance of Tan the Conman acting like a president.

A yes. Reading reports by real journalists and watching Russian propaganda on YouTube is exactly the same. They just have to be parsed carefully.

You seem to have something in common with conspiracy theorists. Dissatisfied with what’s knowable through reputable sources you seek out shitty ones and delude yourself you are panning for gold. Newsflash! You are not in a stream in Yukon, you are sifting through a litter box. Stop showing us cat turds and asking if we think maybe this time it’s gold.

Reminds me of the official Japanese propaganda line during the latter stages of WWII, when the U.S. was taking Japanese-held islands (or bypassing strongholds), moving inexorably closer to the homeland. “It’s our strategy to draw them in, so we can crush them with our indomitable Yamato fighting spirit!”

As for the “reliable sources have messed up before” argument, that’s no justification for presenting bullshit as fact. It’s like promoters of quackery and woo saying “Medicine has been wrong before!” Yeah, but you’re still selling snake oil.
