In defence of Russia

I don’t understand your actions. When I post something, I don’t want to appear biased, or ignorant, or stupid. So I make sure my words can withstand some scrutiny. If I posted something and another poster took it apart the way Dissonance and others do to you yours, I’d be embarrassed and ashamed. I’d be more careful the next time I profess any knowledge on a subject. I’d feel a need to be better.

You just move on. Maybe you’ll make a half-assed admission that your alternative sources presented ‘alternative facts’ but in a week or two, you post up more crap.

I don’t get you.

Meanwhile, the all-powerful Russian military seems to have suffered unacceptable troop losses due to its habit of storing high explosives near barracks, and because its crack recruits couldn’t stop yapping on their cellphones.

I dunno what they’re thinking throwing their own front line troops under the bus like that publicly.

“It’s your own damned fault you are getting killed in a war zone you didn’t want to be in to support an vanity project invasion by a leader revealed decidedly not to be a 55th dimensional chess player” is certainly one way to play things. Maybe not the way I’d do it, but it’s definitely a choice.

Russian command have never shown anything but contempt towards its own combat troops. It’s basically their core doctrine.

It’s not just the crack recruits yapping on their cell phones, it’s the (allegedly) crack elite of the Russian military. Member of the 10th Spetsnaz Brigade leaves his geolocation on while posting to social media, and takes a photo of himself showing the club logo of the building he’s stationed at in Sahy, Kherson. Any guesses on what happened next?

But hey, at least they weren’t storing the high explosives in the same building, so I guess the spetsnaz has got some sort of leg up over the conscripts.

At least he didn’t leave any pizza boxes lying around.

Dissonance posted some detailed points about the legal aspects of the Bosphorus Strait treaty or whatever its technical name is. That is fine and informative. But it was not really negating what I said. The strait is closed to military vessels. Be it by specific full enforcement or request.
That was an offshoot of my original post about political posts being moderated out. It was mentioned that Turkey was denying Russian vessels passage. I decided to post to that and we had a rabbit hole to explore. It happens. Often information comes up when following these offshoots.

Biased?
Situations usually have built in biases. War, economics, politics. Various sides have various plus and minus aspects. They can change dynamically over time. Internal and external factors can enhance or detract.
Noting that Russia had a large materiel advantage at the start and ongoing in the war is not biased. It is not cheer-leading. In fact, noting that only makes Ukraine success in this war all the more impressive.
Noting decades of stress in Russia over the encroachment of NATO does not make me pro Russian. It helped me realize why Russia finally did go to war. I wish there had been some diplomatic solutions instead.
But it is a war. At every moment of it, I would still prefer a ceasefire and diplomatic solution. Long before the Maidan mess. The separation of the Donbas regions.
But it is happening. Overall, Ukraine is suffering far more than Russia. I wish it was not so. But it is a technical fact. I do not see the point of so many wars. Often in the end, not much is gained, too much is lost. By the winners and losers.

Lots of folks post stuff on various threads that is partially or mostly wrong. It happens. Opinions are just that. I very seldom reply in a nasty way to someone who puts some effort into a post. Or if it is just an opinion. ( other than FU type of opinion )

You don’t understand my actions. Okay. I often feel the same regarding others.

A pretty long, probably pointless post. But I had some spare time.

Putin started the war, according to his own words, because he doesn’t believe Ukraine is a real country or ethnicity, but rather that it should be and has always been part of Russia. His own words. It’s not about NATO, it’s about Putin’s ambition for restoring Russia’s power over Ukraine.

The various things he has said about Ukraine as a country and ethnicity are far back in second place to his and a lot of other high ranking and even average Russians concerns about the security concerns of Ukraine being a member of NATO. As I have pointed out with lots of cites, even high ranking western political and military folks have said this as well.
In his own words, Putin has said he started this due to Russian security fears and also to assist the Donbas areas who wanted to protect themselves from the anti Russian sentiment and actions of the later Ukraine governments. A sort of situation that has been grounds for military actions by countries of all political stripes, east, west, whatever. With terrible results such as this war.

Ukraine was not going to join NATO. Wasn’t. Putin has ensured that they will.

Bullshit. Russia had nothing to fear from Ukraine. Anyone who believes Ukraine was a threat to Russia is an idiot.

The worst thing about this war is it being a proxy war.
Of course this has and is happening in other places.
Two opponents, either may be a single country or group of countries, use another country to battle in. Ukraine has been jerked around by western countries and Russia for many years. The government has been instituted and controlled by one or the other side. This leads to a government that is not allied to its citizens but to its outside supporters. Ukraine has suffered and declined due to this for a long time. Government people who can be bought or influenced by outside players are apt to be corruptible/corrupt. The country and its people suffer for it. This war has been going on for decades. Only lately hass the daily death toll increased to such horrible levels.

I don’t think Russia had to fear Ukraine either. But it did have to fear what others wanted to use Ukraine for.

Ukraine forces were being trained and equipped to NATO standards before the war broke out. Still in early stages. Unfortunately they had not received materiel in any useful amount. The back and forth Western/Russian influenced/controlled governments kept membership on hold. But after Maidan, and the ensuing more pro western/NATO friendly governments with definite anti Russian bent, Russia went over the edge. It is very likely that the post Maidan, very anti Russia governments would have gone NATO. Not for sure, but very likely.

WTF? And exactly who do you think Russia is being a proxy for?

Russia is not a proxy. Ukraine is the battle ground for a proxy war between Russia and U.S./NATO/others…

This is not a proxy war. It is an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation by your hero, Putin, in an attempt to recreate the Soviet Union and bring back his own glory days.

Ok, I’m stupid enough to ask. What did “others” want to use Ukraine for that only could be solved by Russia invading them?

So what is it? Is Russia a proxy and it’s a proxy war? Or is Russia is a combatant and it’s a Russian war of aggression? It’s one or the other. It can’t be both.
