In defense of late-era Simpsons episodes

Yes. I’ve seen every episode. Modern Simpsons is dogshit.

I’ve seen every episode. If that’s what you call dog shit, wow, you must have a very talented dog.

For how many years have you continued to loyally watch this dogshit program?

“How can you say the show is shit if you’ve not watched it?”
“Why would you watch it if you think it’s shit?”

Damned if you do…

I watched it consistently up until around 2003. The first eight seasons–particularly seasons 3-8–are packed full of classics. So many great moments.

Then Mike Scully became showrunner, and it became wackier and less about the characters. You used to have real character arcs, but instead it shifted to the characters acting as mere props for gags. Now I find if I catch glimpses of recent episodes, the warmth of those early seasons seems completely absent. I’m just not interested in that kind of show.

Yeah, that’s my sweet spot, too. The first season was kinda meh; the second season they were starting to find their voice. The third season they hit their stride and kept it up for a few seasons. I remember season 8 as the season where things were really starting to get weird (Homer eating the Guatemalan insanity pepper comes to mind.) It was still a pretty good season, but that’s when the tone started shifting for me.

I think the insanity pepper episode is an interesting case. It’s definitely bizarre, but it still feels grounded with regard to Homer’s arc, where he comes to better understand his relationship with Marge.

You really think so? I have found that South Park has suffered a serious downturn in comedic quality. Once, the show had original plots that got great mileage out of the youth and non-understanding of its juvenile protagonists. More and more, each episode seems to be either parodies of a TV show or movie, or a completely transparent, heavy-handed current-events statement. (The second Futurama run suffered from that as well.) It can still be funny, but not nearly as much so as in the show’s heyday. The last real original plot I remember (off the top of my head) was the “Fish Sticks” episode, which was a riot.

“Cartman Finds Love” was pretty much a classic, and that’s from 2012. So, yeah, I do think so. It’s consistently made me laugh, in so much that I don’t care what season an episode of South Park is from–I’ll probably find something funny in it, but with the Simpsons, very early Simpsons (season 1 mostly, and maybe season 2) to pretty much any Simpsons in the last 10 years, I’ll pass on.
