I’m curious as to why the United States chooses to place the message “In God We Trust” on its various monetary denominations. I would have thought the government would have shied away from that, what with the so-called “separation of church and state” and all. Obviously, no specific god is specified, so different religions could take it to mean whatever deity they choose to believe in, but what about those of us who don’t believe in a god? I am an athiest, and I wouldn’t say that this matter of religion on money offends me (I figure people can believe whatever they want and its not like there’s some god to be angry at me for playing by the rules of some other religion, so I don’t really care), but this is just something I’ve been curious about for a while and I’m sure someone out there can help me. Thanks!
