Here are mine (in no particular order between the ten):
That’s allright Mama
All Shook Up
Jailhouse Rock
Suspicious Minds
Don’t Be Cruel
Mystery Train
Stuck on You
Heartbreak Hotel
Hound Dog
and last but not least:
In The Ghetto
Yeah, I know that last one is tacky and cheesy, but it’s Elvis!! And he sings the song with such emotion you almost forget the cheesy lyrics and you almost forget it’s a Mac Davis song. Just compare Elvis singing a Mac Davis song to anyone else singing a Mac Davis song (i.e., ‘Music in my Life’, ‘It’s Hard to be Humble’, etc.)
Burnin’ Love - I could listen to this over and over again (and I have)
Teddy Bear (as about as Elvis-y sounding as you can get)
Don’t Be Cruel
Can’t Help Falling In Love
Wooden Heart
Way Down (his last chart hit before he died)
It’s Now or Never
All Shook Up
Suspicious Minds (nice fake ending)
Love Me Tender
Lonesome Cowboy
Heartbreak Hotel
Don’t Be Cruel
Marie’s the Name Of His Latest Flame
Tryin’ To Get To You
Hound Dog
Love Me
Good Rockin’ Tonight
Moody Blue
Baby Let’s Play House
Lumped together as a group of three are Viva Las Vegas, Suspicious Minds, and Such A Night, which I always think of as a glorious of trio of goofy, jumping, uber-swanky, dance around the house songs.
Of the country songs, I love I’m Left, You’re Right, And She’s Gone.
Moving on to gospel, How Great Thou Art is probably, maybe, my most beloved Elvis song EVER. This one is also a great personal memory for me, my grandmother loved listening to Elvis’s religious music, and I heard this countless times as I was growing up. Peace In the Valley and Where No One Stands Alone round out this category.
Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, and Too Much are also favorites, but it’s hard to pick the best of this sound.
The earlier the better for me. I’d put mine down something like this:
Baby Let’s Play House
Mystery Train
Good Rockin Tonight
Hound Dog
My Baby Left me
That’s All Right Mama
Blue Moon Of Kentucky
Jail House Rock
Heartbreak Hotel
All Shook Up
King Creole (This is my favorite of his movies, too).
I do like his singing though, in just about any of his songs, so for that, at least, I do like the later material also.
