In praise of America

As I read and watch the news particularly at this time when Americans are giving up their sons and daughters, like they’ve done many times before in pursuit of a safer better world for others as well as themselves, I feel compelled to share my deep admiration for the country, it’s leadership, its military through all ranks, and the yes even the taxpayers who foot the bills for the military interventions.

If as a Canadian, I have any comfort in the future for my descendants, it is the knowledge that there exists in the world a powerful nation (militarily, economically, and morally) next door, that is willing to fight for a better world. A good part of the rest of the world seems so fucked up or vulnerable to being fucked up.

I regret that my country is not right beside you in Iraq.

Now about our softwood lumber dispute…

Glad you feel that way grienspace. Well, all except the lumber, about which I know naught - I’m on the far side of the U.S. from you (but half my family’s Canadian).

Thank you for saying that, grienspace.

Goodness knows America isn’t perfect, and there are real issues between our two countries. But we are friends.

I will never forget the wonderful hospitality given to Americans stranded in Canada on 9/11. Even though nobody I know was in that situation, it meant a lot to me and I’m sure to most Americans. I recently made a donation to Newfoundland flood relief as a small way to show my appreciation.

It saddens me to post that at this moment this thread has only had 97 views. The two neighboring threads with similarly recent last posts are “I’m so glad I don’t drive to work.” with 326 views and “I smell doo-doo” with 354.

Thank you, grienspace. As the wife of a US servicemember, and a soon-to-be servicemember, it does my heart good to read sentiments such as yours.

Sigh…someday I’ll learn to check who’s logged in first…Bluesman’s the service member, I’m the wife.

Thanks, grienspace. America always tries to do what’s right – sometimes ungainlily, sometimes misguidedly, sometimes on target, and sometimes with total confusion rampant, but the most blatant political opponents will agree that “we should do the right thing” – just disagree on what exactly that “the right thing” might be.

Will I get flamed for calling you a worthy follower in the footsteps of Gordon Sinclair?

I will simply add Thank you grienspace

You’re most welcome everyone! I’ve been away for some time, but a vanity search revealed that this thread which I thought died after Ringo’s post managed a few more replies.

Poly, I find it ironic as per ** rowrrbazzle’s** post that my pro American comments seem to be largely ignored as was Sinclair’s famous article. Perhaps in a couple of decades someone might resurrect this thread. I only hope that I don’t share Sinclair’s fate at that point

I appreciate that grienspace. Its nice to hear someone admit that the US does good things.

PS you forgot we are a powerful nation scientifically too :). many medical & agricultural discoveries are made here, which probably prevent more suffering around the world than anything else we do.
