You know what? I think we could use a thread for things like this. I’m sure mods sometimes feel like nobody appreciates them since so many threads about things people disagree with. But, since it probably won’t engender much discussion, a single thread is probably enough.
I know I’ll be adding my own as they come up again. Moderating need not be a thankless job.
There are lots of message boards out there and while the board itself attracts a great clientele, if it weren’t for the moderators, it would be just another internet mess. There are a lot of behind the scenes things that go on that we don’t see, spam and the like, that remain filtered from our time. So thanks go out to the past, present, and future mods who have been patrolling our borders.
Mods here get a lot of flack, much of it undeserved. During “the unpleasantness” last spring, I contributed my share…perhaps more…of that flack. Still, they allow dissent, and even respond to well reasoned complaints. Warnings can and have been rescinded, rules changed, etc. There’s plenty of places on the internet where that doesn’t happen.
I generally think the mods here do their jobs very well, and moreover, I think it’s fantastic that there is a part of this board where we can discuss and even debate mod actions. Huzzah, SDMB!
I must say that over the past 10 years I’ve been hanging around here, I’ve seen the level of jerkery, trainwrecks and downright hostility significantly decrease, and I credit the overall mature and effective moderation and administration of this board.
I would say that pay-to-post had a lot more to do with driving down trouble-maker traffic than any mod decisions. I for one miss the mods we had back in the day - there seemed to be a lot more human interaction between the mods and posters a few years ago. Everything seems too stuffy these days.
Well, the three Mods/Administrators I know personally are all great fellows. Ditto the several ex-Mods, who survived the experience with little visible scarring. Otherwise, what Fear Itself said.
