In-State Tuition and marriage?

I don’t usually venture into GQ, but I’m hoping that someone will help me out:).

I’m moving to Ohio to be with my husband-to-be, and starting school in January. It’s my understanding that I need to be an in-state resident for one full year before I can obtain in-state tuition rates. So I’m definitely paying out of state rates in January. However, we’re getting married come September. Does that automatically mean I’m given in-state rates since he’s a lifelong resident of Ohio? Or does marriage not even apply and I’m still required to meet the 1 year guideline for tuition rates?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ava

It depends on Ohio’s rules. The same thing happened to a grad school buddy of mine; he was from WY, and applied and was accepted to Indiana U. He then married an IN resident before actually enrolling in the program. He had to file a bunch of paperwork, basically showing that his wife was pretty much a lifelong Indiana resident (long story), but eventually they gave him in-state residency status.

Again, it depends on the state rules.

A friend of mine was a TN resident, married a grad student who was paying out of state tuition. He could not get in state tuition until she (the TN resident) actually started grad school. I don’t understand why - he had filed for in state tuition when they married, before she was a student, and didn’t get it.

There should be an office at the school - possibly in the admissions office, but if not, they can direct you to the right person to ask who can tell you the details and what forms you’ll need to file.
