"In the Summertime". WTF? (Brutal opinions/interpretations)

THIS song came out when I was about 10 or so. Even as a kid I thought the words were kind of weird. Now I’m on the wrong side of fifty and the Lyrics still give me pause:

Have a drink, have a drive,
go out and see what you can find

Um…drink and drive? Ohboy the 70’s were crazy.

If her daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal.
If her daddy’s poor, just do as you feel.***

So if her old man is loaded I have to kiss her ass and spend my own money doing things that this rich bitch could pay for her self? But if pops is a pauper I should just bang the shit out of her whether she wants it or not?
If she’s rich, if she’s nice,
bring you’re friends and we’ll all go into town.

So…? In this line the spoiled brat pays while we party at the bars in town? This line comes after the previous so do we assume we’re sick of paying for this rich cunts dinner and now it’s time for her to cough up the goodies?

The song seems to be sang by some lecherous sponge who wants to party, but only with a rich girl, buying her dinner once to butter her up before the big soaking (and big gang bang where he shares her with his friends).

Or is there a more innocent meaning to this song?

“Do what you feel” doesn’t necessarily involve rape, you know.

Maybe the point was that a rich girl would expect to be taken out to fancy places where you’d be spending money. But a poor girl will be happy hanging out with you, doing the stuff you usually do like fishing or swimming in the sea (or drinking and driving).

Have a drink, have a drive,
go out and see what you can find

This could be interpreted as have a drink, or have a drive, or go out and see what you can find. Then again, having A (as in one) drink and then driving is hardly a recipe for disaster.

I would venture the songwriter’s intent was rather more innocuous than you suspect. Likely he was striving for a good groove, rhyme, and the feeling of having a good time when the weather is pleasant. I think you probably gave a whole lot more thought to the lyrics than he did.

And knowing is half the battle.

But it could. Because you can do whatever you feel. Because her daddy’s so poor that he can’t defend her.

I noticed those lyrics seems like decades ago. Still like the music, but sure don’t sing along.

Hey come on, cut Jerry and the gang a break.
There not dirty, they’re not mean. They love everybody. (But they do as they please.)

There was a long long thread on this in the past.

I’ve always assumed that you take her out for a meal only “if her daddy’s rich” because you’re already sponging off her - she’s paying (with daddy’s money) because you’re skint. And maybe you can get her to pay the bar tab for your friends too. Whereas if you’re both broke, just hang out and make out somewhere.

I’ve also always assumed that the sex described is consensual (and only with you, not all your friends too), although “making it good in a lay-by” is pretty low-rent behavior. Plus nowadays you’d have to contend with doggers.

I remember this from when it first came out, and I was in high school. I kind of agree with pkbites. Even then I thought the lyrics made the singer (or rather, I guess, the character he is playing) come over as a bit of a douche (not the word I would have used back then, but it seems like the right one now). I never liked the song as much as many of my peers seemed to, mainly for this reason.
