In what way does a cosmetic "facial" dramatically improve skin?

I write this as an admitted skeptic–my skepticism stemming from having heard countless persons over the years (on television and in real life) rave on and on about how “miraculous,” how “transforming,” how “wonderful” a cosmetic facial can be.

In what ways might a 45-minute topical procedure have any transforming effects–even temporary–on one’s skin? What does a facial do that a 10-second face cleansing does not? I understand the pleasure associated with having one’s face massaged, but what else is involved? Is there any evidence that a deep “exfoliation” has any substantive effect on the appearance of one’s skin?

I’ve posted this in GQ (and not IMHO), as I’m hoping for answers with at least some basis in reality/fact. We could also talk about cosmetics and their breathless claims, but I’ll leave that discussion for another day, another forum.

A professional cosmetic facial simply cleanses, tones, and moisturizes your face more completely than home care. The facialist probably is using products that are more effective than what you have at home. Also, it’s easier for the facialist to get a good angle on cleaning out pores than you can. When I’m able to afford it, I go for facials once every 1-2 months. My skin feels like silk and the color is more even.
