No, in all honesty I don’t find your examples to be funny and I don’t chuckle them away when they are presented to me. My point was merely to demonstrate that the gender stereotypes are prevalent in way that are derogatory towards women as much as they are towards men. But I will keep my eyes open for more examples like the ones you mention.
Some airlines have had (and some still have) a policy that forbids seating unaccompanied children next to adult men.
In what ways are these commercials causing there to be systematic, ingrained biases against men? And that are not already based in sexist notions that have already been negatively affecting women since well, forever? Please enlighten me.

Just a note, not a warning.
Actually, I do sort of get what miss elizabeth was getting at (I think).
There are very real, very serious ways in which men are discriminated against such as Slithy Tove’s story - it’s disgraceful that men are treated that way, and as the mother of a young boy, I worry about his future and what sorts of struggles he’s going to face because of being a boy.
However, the first page of this thread was nonsense about women taking 70 cents that every man makes (Huh? What woman? What man? What on earth are you talking about?) or getting two years paid holiday after having a baby, or whinging about ‘How dare my teacher plan her pregnancy to screw with my school year!’ because everyone knows pregnancy is the type of thing that’s easy to plan and no one ever struggles to get pregnant - obviously that bitch should have aborted when she realized how she was affecting her students!
My point is, there are very real ways in which men are discriminated against - what a shame that this thread is filled up with misogynist garbage instead of a discussion of those actual issues. That being said, page two and page three are a big improvement.
As I said, I have a little boy. I’m considering sending him to a boys only school when he begins in a couple of years specifically because of some of the issues raised in this thread. Him not getting preferential treatment at a Vegas bar is not one of them.
Not to thread hijack, but as an FYI households with income of less than ~$70k pay 0% tax on capital gains.
If you start such a thread on a usually left-leaning MB such as the SDMB, some posters will laugh and point because discrimination against men is funny. Women, not so much. Kind of like prison rape.
Who is laughing and pointing?
Amongst those trying to have a conversation. Not miss elizabeth. Laughing and pointing is the only contribution she has most of the time.
NM
She’s the one. I am unfamiliar with her posting habits.
Then I assure you, the laughing and pointing is a product of the poster, not the topic or the message board.
Thank you. I guess I shouldn’t expect to get an answer from her, but now I don’t even really want one.
I agree it is a shame the thread got a hijacked by people laughing and pointing. Inequality between the sexes is prevalent and will only ever get better if we all get better at recognising it. That’s why I welcome such a thread, where people can contribute what they have found in their lives that discriminates men. It is far too easy to walk around with your eyes closed to inequality.
Slithy Tove, I am so, so sorry for what you have had to go through. It is an absolute outrage. It’s the same way of thinking that I was trying to point out in my earlier post, when I mentioned how the men I worked with were prevented from cuddling and comforting the children. Like all men are evil sexual predators, a priori, default man-mode is to harm. Thanks for sharing, like I said, we need these examples to open our eyes to the inequality and also to re-examine the way we think (man=bad).
Here is another example:
When my dad taught maths & physics for a while he would also tutor any students who wanted extra lessons. It would always be at the kitchen table, but he always asked my mum to stay around just in case there would ever be any questions. I’ve tutored English, and I’ve never had to have another person around. Because my chromosomes don’t make me a rabid sexual predator like my evil dad? WTF?
Totally agree.
There’s also a tendency among some “men’s rights” types to suggest that, just because there are some particular areas where men suffer discrimination, therefore the whole feminist movement is redundant and full of man-haters. The belligerent and hateful misogyny of some of these people tends to detract from the real issues, which (perhaps ironically) is precisely the argument that some anti-feminists make about the radical fringe of the feminist movement.
Oh I thought of another one: cover charges to places. Often girls get in free but men have to pay.
And then there’s the fact that if a girl is attractive, she can pretty much have whatever she wants in life handed to her on a silver platter simply for being cute. That isn’t the case for even very attractive men (though it is still advantageous for men to be attractive, just not to the same degree).
I thought this thread was about actual gender discrimination, instead of “things Rig is angry with pretty girls about.”
Jeez, it’s a damn good thing I actually wasn’t trying to rile anyone up. Three little lines, and I’ve gone and hijacked the whole thing. Or maybe you’re a little too sensitive to criticism of your (dumb) complaints? Nah, it must be me.
Seriously though, I’ve spoken out about gender discrimination against men (and prison rape in particular) on this board a number of times. Look at my posting history. It’s just that most of these complaints are stupid (as ladyfoxfyre is beginning to see).
Seriously, some hot chick obviously shit in his Corn Flakes this morning.
I’ll be in my bunk.
