Inception Anticipation (spoiler-free zone)

Inception is the new film from Christopher Nolan: Oscar-nominated for Memento, responsible for helping Batman bring in $700M+ in domestic box office, and the brainchild behind the cult classic The Prestige (which managed to generate 4 pages of Dope discussion just in the last 3 days).

With some familiar Nolan faces (Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy) and some new ones (Leo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the pedigree looks very strong while the story itself has been intentionally couched in a high level of secrecy.

Here’s the teaser and here’s the first trailer. And here’s the new one-sheet.

It opens 10 weeks from today: July 16.

So in the interest of keeping the story as much a surprise as possible, please use spoiler tags for anything that might divulge a little too much. I’m even going to tag the basic plot premise for now:Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime. As more is divulged in the advertising, certain topics and speculation will be fair game, but for now, I want to keep things at a low simmer and focus on people’s impressions and–personally speaking–excitement. It’s definitely my #1 Must-See for the summer.

This is the movie I’m looking forward to the most also. I skimmed over the spoilered section there, and I think I’ll try to avoid reading or hearing any more about the film until I see it. I’m glad to see that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in this too; he’s always good.

As I know literally nothing about this movie beyond the concept they threw around when it was announced, “DiCaprio is a dream-walker of some kind”, its really hard to get TOO excited about it.

Yeah, Nolan is awesome and he’s put together an amazing cast, but this is not in OMG OMG OMG territory yet. Maybe I need to watch the trailer.

Saw the teaser trailer way back and saw the official trailer before Iron Man tonight. Looks very very cool. While obviously the city morphing stuff is CGI, I read that they tried to do as many practical effects as possible, including the changing gravity stuff, for which the actors had to learn a new fighting style to deal with running around a set that was turning up side down.

A new trailer is up, and it even looks more kick ass. Can’t wait!

I’m more excited for this movie than I have been for any movie since Alexander so naturally I’m worried as it was incredibly disappointing. After seeing this trailer before Iron Man 2 last week I have therefore decided to tell myself daily that this movie is destined to suck hard in an effort to lower my expectations. It hasn’t been working so far but I’ll keep at it.

I saw the trailer for this before Iron Man 2 tonight as well. My first thought was Dark City + Matrix + sunlight. For some reason I couldn’t get into it. I was more excited by the Last Airbender trailer than I was for Inception, and I’ve never watched the cartoon.

Three new TV ads are up. Mostly stuff from the trailers, but a few new images as well.

Some pretty cool new poster designs (concentrating on individual actors) have now been released.

Totally looking forward to it. Nolan is currently #1 on my list of directors for whom I don’t need to know a thing about their next project - just tell me when it opens and I’ll be there.

A new featurette is out now, and will be playing in various theaters during the pre-trailer video clip assembly that’s so commonplace now. No real spoilers, but a little more new footage and some really striking behind-the-scenes shots.

The first review (no spoilers) is promising.

23 days and counting!

Oh, and another trailer with new scenes (and a couple more vague plot points) that highlight the terrific cast more than previous ones.

And the reviews are coming in. Wow. (note: very mild spoilers in Samples #4 & 7).

10 Days and counting…

There were only 2 movies I was going to see this summer since everything else looked uninspiring. Toy Story 3 and this.

The film premieres tomorrow night at Midnight. Maddingly, the earliest I can see it is Sunday afternoon. Grrrr…

I’m going to try to catch an early showing on Friday. I usually wait several days on new releases to avoid crowds, but I’m really anxious to see Inception. I love Nolan’s movies and the cast in this one has me extra-excited.
