Incredible wastes of money - personal examples?

No way there’s a plot of land in Rolling Hills or RPV for just $150K. Man, that must be a postage stamp sized lot!

I do it in subtle ways (no Land Rover for me); for example, I might see a $60 pair of pants that I like in the store, but think “No way can I afford to shell out 60 bucks right now.”

Then, the next day, a friend will call and ask if I’d like to go out…

…and by the time we’ve had dinner, a couple of drinks, and picked up some odds and ends on an impormptu trip to Wal-Mart…

…there went the 60 bucks I couldn’t afford to spend yesterday.

Or, take last weekend… Here I’d been subsisting on toe jam and stale crackers for a week, saving money for a trip I’m taking in May. I woke up Sunday morning with a yen for pancakes from my favorite breakfast place, but thought, “No… I shouldn’t go out to breakfast. I could make MYSELF pancakes, but breakfast out is not in the budget…”

Then I decided what the heck–how much of a dent could ten or 12 bucks make in my budget? So I got dressed and off I went to get my pancakes.

After I’d eaten, I stopped by a friend’s house to say hello while I was in her neck of the woods (oh, did I mention that my favorite breakfast place is out of town?), and we started chatting about home improvement projects…

Before I knew it, I’d spent over $100 at Home Depot, and she and I were in my yard, digging post holes to replace a strip of fence in the back.

Turned out to be one expensive breakfast (and considering that I couldn’t even really afford that

Does that count?

auntie em, I do the same thing. I can’t afford to buy a new pair of pants (even though I’m down to two pair that’s wearable  ) but between the trip to Wal-Mart for catfood, hair conditioner, and water (that’s what we go there for…but somehow we always leave with more than that), the trip to the movies, and the lunch out at Del Taco, we just bought at least 2 decent pair of pants.
