Indian Dopers - is it weird to go to temple by yourself?

I don’t think so, but I always worry. Thoughts?

Perfectly normal. My grandmother (who was the last really religious person in my family) used to go alone all the time. On the other hand, she was a regular, so she’d always meet people she knew there, so I’m not sure it counts. I think it would be perfectly acceptable in south India to go to a temple by yourself, perform your prayers and leave whatever offering you choose to, and let that be that.

If you just want to go as a visitor, that’s even less strange. Why would you worry?

Incidentally, I would say “go to a temple” or “go to *the *temple”. The phrase “go to temple” sounds more Jewish than Hindu to me.

Ok thanks. There is a temple nearby and I want to go but I always feel super self-conscious. My SO *would *go with me, but it’s completely boring and alien to him- he’s very American and doesn’t have cultural roots anywhere (but Long Island), so why drag him along? And Janamashtmi is coming up. I’m not religious at all but I like my culture and my clothes and I still speak the language and I still want to be part of it.

oh and I always say “go to temple” because that’s how I parse it from Hindi “Mandi jaana hai” - no articles there.

You want I should do a poll of my coworkers and see what they think?

I wouldn’t mind! I’m 33, and in a relationship with a non-Indian, but still like to go sometime. What do they think when they see a Indian woman of that age alone?
