"Indiana Wants Me"

The song: Indiana Wants Me by R. Dean Taylor, 1970.

Until a few weeks ago, for my entire life, I thought this song was sung by Cat Stevens. Others have told me they thought this supposition was insane and that it sounds nothing like Cat.

However, I truly believe there is something about the song that really imitates Cat. Especially the part that goes: “I wish I had you…to talk to.” That line specifically, the rhythm of it and the cadence of the voice, reminds me very strongly of Cat Stevens’ style.

Am I totally alone in feeling this way?

I remember my parents hated that song because the siren in it made them think they were about to be pulled over.

It never sounded like Cat Stevens to me, though. I think it came out a good couple of years before Stevens’s first hit.

Warning: Anecdote (rather than data) follows.

I enjoyed Indiana wants me a lot as a kid, so much so that I still recall the tune and most of the lyrics even now.

And I also enjoyed Cat Stevens a lot at that time too.

I never associated this song with anything having to do with Cat Stevens.

I liked the song when I was a kid. Sometimes I let it play when it pops up on the iPod. It doesn’t sound like Cat Stevens to me.

(Incidentally, the cat just jumped up for some attention.)

I never thought it was Cat Stevens, a/k/a Yusuf Islam, but boy, that song is a blast from the past! I haven’t thought about it for years and years and now realize I still remember many of the lyrics.

I don’t think the voice sounds at all like Cat Stevens, but now that you point it out, I do agree that the syncopation of that specific line at the end of the chorus is similar to Stevens’s style.

Nothing at all like Cat Stevens.

Me, too!

I was in junior high when that song was popular.

Tea for the Tillerman: 1970. Same year.

That’s a fair assessment.

Fun Fact: R. Dean Taylor was far more successful as a songwriter with the Motown empire than as a singer. Among his compositions was the Supreme’s hit Love Child.

Wow… I thought that song came out before 1970. I was 10 then, and remember my cousin Becky coming to stay with me sometimes when my parents were gone. She would bring her carrying case of 45s-remember those? Plastic tubes with a stack of 45s inside? I wasn’t allowed to have ‘grown up’ music, my records were all Disney type tunes, and I LOVED it when Becky came over with her music! This was one of my favorites, along with ‘A Boy Named Sue’.

Lord, we stalked this 45 at the record store. Could not wait to get it. Forty some years later, and I have it on my iPod.

I grew up in Evansville.
I was always vaguely and inexplicably proud or something that Indiana was mentioned in a top-40 song.

Even better is your city getting the shout out…

“Hello Cleveland! Are you ready to rock?”

“Hey- that’s us! Yeaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! Woo hoo! Allll Riiiggght!”

Awesome. I’ve always played “(Back Home Again In) Indiana” as fast as possible, and didn’t know there was another one. I’ll try to cook up a little medley for the (few) people listening and see if they can get a little glow behind it. Thanks!

Really? I have lived in Evansville all my life. what years did you spend here?

Couldn’t they have given the poor guy’s girlfriend a name? He just calls her “love”. That’s lame.

all insane and alone like this…

This was the first album I ever bought; I felt damn special, having made the leap from 45s to LP. And yes, I still have it.

‘Indiana’ brings back memories, but I’ve always preferred ‘Gotta See Jane’.
