Indians and the naming of sports teams.

As was pointed out by kidchameleon, Florida State University not only has the permission of the Seminole Indians to use their name, but their express approval. Based on that, and the arbitrary nature of the NCAA’s recent declaration Florida State Says It Will Challenge Ban on Indian Mascots During NCAA Postseason Tournaments.

FSUs use of the Seminole name and it’s mascot is in no way “hostile or abusive” of or to the great people of the Seminole Indian nation.

Back off, NCAA jerks. :wally

Go Garnet & Gold!

disclaimer: the poster attended FSU happily for over 9 years

Now that, is absolutely absurd.

It’s probably the same sort of stupid reasoning that says it’s okay for a black guy to call another black guy a “nigger”.

:smack: the word “nation” should be “tribe”.

Zakalwe is correct, the only Seminole Nation is in Oklahoma.

:smack: :smack:

I was gonna point out that both the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the Seminole Tribe of Florida are recognized as sovereign peoples.

More or less.

I also see it as great logic for a traditionally Black school to name their sports team the Fighting Niggers or somesuch.

I mean, they’re mostly black so that would be ok-right?

Seminole Nation opposes FSU’s ‘Seminoles’ mascot

It’s not as universally accepted as FSU would have you believe.

Could you explain this a bit further? It seems to me you’re offering two sites that disagree.

Is the difference between the Tribes in FL and OK, or just differences among one tribe?

They are two different tribes. The agreement that FSU has is with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. It includes a financial arrangement, scholarships, and historical preservation of Seminole culture and artifacts.

The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma has no such agreement with FSU.

Yeah, except that no one else could call them that. Non-black announcers would have to call them “the Fighting N-word”.

Enough already. Let’s just change Washington Redskins to Fighting Niggards and be done with it.

When I was in college and we heard this argument about our school mascot being somehow disparaging, I proposed that we change it to the Florida State University Backwards-Ass Rednecks, but I couldn’t garner enough support to git 'er done. <shrug>

Haha @ Liberal.

John Madden:“It’s Fighting N-word ball at the 35, 3rd down and 3.”
Al Michaels : “Man these N-words sure having a great year! I think they’re a legitimate contender come the playoffs”
Stuart Scott: “Oh ya Al, gotta love how the Niggers play ball”
Al Michaels: “Ya, that N-word quarterback sure can sling it around”

God, that would be comedy gold.

Why do you think that?

Some sort of black humor, I suppose.

I’ve always thought it funny to hear the news media be all PC and say n-word. Especially since if they’re white they always say it in that uncomfortable quivery voice, like they’re so afraid of offending everyone.

Say what it is, it’s nigger.

There’s nothing wrong with repeating what was said, especially when it’s a news story. People have gotta lighten up. Like this OP and the NCAA’s actions, it’s PC overkill.

Beyond that, I think the comedy gold is pretty obvious and not something that can really be explained.

As a member of the Mexican-American community, I am angered at the obvious and deplorable lack of representation of Mexican Americans in professional sports team names!

Are we not noble or brave enough to be even be considered? Is White America embarassed to have “Mayans” emblazoned across their chests? Is the average sports fan too tied up in years of racism and prejudice to chant “Go Tejanos Go! Win Tejanos Win!”? Will I ever live to see the day when a proud Vaquero rides into a stadium while 80,000 fans are excited and filled with pride? I want to hear someone say “Oh yes, I have been a lifelong fan of the Zapatistas, I got this team cap for Christmas.”

I demand equal representation now.

Oh wait, I am supposed to be insulted if they named a team after something related to my ethnic group? Even if it is nothing like the Wetbacks or the Beaners? …Oh, OK, never mind.

Incas maybe, but Mayans? I mean, c’mon…

They understand it. The leftist memos instruct them to pretend they don’t.
