Individual episodes of shows you normally like that you dislike

Two I can think of:

  1. The “Big Bang Theory” episode when Sheldon tutors Leonard about American football. I know it’s my hang-up, but the idea of a straight American man being that ignorant of football suspends my disbelief.

  2. The episode of “Criminal Minds” when the guy kills people by snapping their necks. I dislike it because that way of death squicks me out. Ironically saw beginning of episode other day. Pics weren’t nearly as graphic as I feared.

“Tonight, on a very special [add sitcom name here]…”

“Gray 17 is Missing” From Babylon 5.

Blossom.

Well, you told me to.
mmm

Clip shows. Not the ones that just show the best scenes, but the ones where 2 minutes of new footage is added to pretend that it’s a new episode.

Comedies that use humiliation as a source of humor. My mom’s best friend in the 1980s moved to California and became a nanny for the newborn twins of Meredith Baxter(-Birney), the mom on Family Ties, so of course we religiously watched it. I hated the episodes where one of the kids would make a fool out of themselves; in particular, one episode had Micha J. Fox’s Alex pretend to know ballet to crash his girlfriend’s ballet class for some reason. And the humor was based around how he had been foolish, was about to be caught when they asked him to dance, and how he was stuck in the situation. Hated it. Still have my autographed promo pictures from all of the actors, though. And as two complete asides, the friend ended up working as nanny for Scott Valentine, “Nick,” the boyfriend of the older sister in the last half of the city, and my childhood cat was named after Meredith’s newborn baby Molley.)

And ditto for clip shows. Even my favorite 80s cartoon, Robotech, had a flipping clip episode, to stretch the series to proper syndication purposes. Dana’s Story, the first episode of the second sub-series Masters, and was a made-up clip show to link it to the first sub-series, since Robotech was made my joining three unrelated Japanese series. What made it more problematic was that it was mostly narrated footage from the first sub-series; maybe if the show had been weekly, the reminder of past plot points would work, but the show was on 5 days a week, sometimes 6, and the first series had just ended the day before, after running for less than two months. I still skip that stupid episode.

The musical episode from Grey’s Anatomy.

The “Dreams” episode of MASH

This is unbelievable to you? I hang around with a lot of Big Bang Theory types and there are some I wager wouldn’t even be able to tell you the correct shape of the ball. For many nerds, their ignorance of sports borders on aggressive.

The fly episode of Breaking Bad and the college reunion episode of the American pHouse of Cards. Big yawners, both.

While that’s true, the absolute BASICS of football are really simple to explain and understand. Anyone that wanted to learn about the game would only have to watch a single game to get the gist of it.

Shal: Guess I need more nerds in my life.

A Taste of Armageddon , ST:TOS

The Infinite Vulcan, ST:TAS

Shades of Grey, ST:TNG

The Sword of Kahless, ST:DS9

Parturition, ST:VOY

Marauders, ST:ENT

There are others, these are off the top of my head.

AH: Are you Vulcan?

The * MAS*H * episode “A Full Rich Day,” with William Watson as a gun-happy officer who commandeers the 4077th, even ordering Henry Blake around (“And no slip-ups!!”)

The * Emergency! * episode “The Nuisance,” which was the fifth-season finale. John Gage was struck by a hit-and-run driver; in the hospital he was treated to emotional abuse by the nurse in the department (Carole Cook), a true nasty crack.

I’m sure I have plenty but the only one that comes to mind due to the mentions of The Big Bang Theory is one I saw a repeat of recently. When Leonard is dating the doctor and the scene cuts to him talking about why hasn’t science found a cure for lactose intolerance and the doctor doesn’t take that opportunity to say “they did, it’s called Lactaid, dumbass” but instead she says “No big deal, you had a bite of cheese dip and you farted. It was cute.”

It is not as simple as “eat a bite of cheese, immediately fart”. They seem to think lactose intolerance just causes gas. It causes gas yes, and bloating and also severe cramps and then the diarrhea like some demon is trying to escape your colon and it lasts for up to a few hours after eating products containing lactose and it is most decidedly not funny. I pretty much hate all references to Leonards L.I. but this episode really rubs me the wrong way because I think a doctor should understand how L.I. actually works and even know that a lactase supplement might help someone with that problem.

Wil E: Rule of Funny.

The Veronica Mars episode where she got Weevil to steal a car for her. Extremely poor characterization from both characters

I love that episode, and I can tell you that my brother has never been to a football game in his life. DH was dragged kicking and screaming to a couple, but doesn’t remember much about them.

I personally hate the Cosby episode where Cliff gives birth to a sandwich. Now, I have to confess to not being a regular watcher of the show, but I had to live with one, in the days before DVR, and On Demand, so sometimes you watched other people’s choices-- but I respected the show. Anyway, this show was supposed to be some kind of tribute to women and what they went through to have babies, but it totally backfired, with its parody of childbirth. I realize they were dream sequences, but they still came across as making fun more than paying respect.

There are a couple of Law & Orders I don’t like, and it’s one of my favorite shows. I’d have to go look it up to remember which ones trigger intense dislike, though. Mostly, I’ll watch that show even for the sixth rerun, but there are a few episodes that I can’t get away from fast enough. I’ll get back to you.

I love the show, which I guess is more of a mini-series, Upstairs, Downstairs, but that “Swedish Tiger” ep. was horrid. It didn’t even originally air in the US, and I didn’t see it until the DVD release.

I don’t like the Home Movies ep. “Brendon Gets Rabies,” just because I hate it when bad things happen to animals.

I have watched football games, and been totally baffled. I only knew it was over because all the people left.
