I remember reading that the gene for Male Pattern Baldness is on the mother’s chromosome. I’m not sure if that’s true or not.
Where can I find a chart, or list, that will tell me what traits are inherited from which parent? I’ve searched, but most of what I find are lesson plans, papers, and the like.
I’m getting old and no longer have the patience for that.
What I want is;
From the mother: “Blah de blah blah blah MPB”
From the father: “Blah de blah blah blah big bones”
Just the facts, ma’am.
Peace,
mangeorge
You can only tell with sex-linked traits, that is, those that show up on the X- or Y-chromosome, which is a comparatively small set of human genetic traits. Wikipedia. And it’s a lot easier to tell with men, who have an X from mom and a Y from dad, than women, who have one X from each parent.
Thanks. That tells me why, but not what. Guess I’ll have to do some reading.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=omim check this link out. It is from the NIH and it is called OMIM:
Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man. You can go chromosome by chromosome and idnetify heritable human traits.
Focus on X-chr, traits of which males are more likely to express, female only if they get a copy from mom and dad (unless it’s dominant…). The can be passed from either mom or dad as each has at least one X-chr.
Y-chr traits go from dad to son.
Also, mitochondrial DNA is passed from mom to either gender as it found in an organelle in the egg and gets copied into the developing embryo. The sperm contributes (virtually) no mitochondrial DNA. There are some genetic disorders found there.
I can go on- but that’s a good start.
ETA: Spelling!!!
Also here is a better link- it goes right to the chromosome maps:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mapview/map_search.cgi?taxid=9606
That is what people said for a long time but I am sure that I read that the whole story is much more complicated than that. I am 35 and the men on my mother’s side of the family where well on their way to baldness by then. I have a thick, luxurious hair at the moment and I hope it stays that way. My hair is obviously more similar to that on my father’s side.
