Inoculation site correlated with presentation?

Does the presentation of viral infections commonly depend on the inoculation site? I know this can happen for HPV, but I wonder if the different possible symptoms of other (obvious) infectious agents are correlated with the mode of transmission (eg GI symptoms from ingestion vs UR from inhalation vs maybe LR from aspiration or heavy inhalation loads).

If so, have there ever been efforts to inoculate on relatively benign sites/mucus membranes?
