Can anyone name more songs that have been “inspired” by the Beatles’ Tomorrow Never Knows? A couple of songs I think that are close to the song (they share the same drum pattern) are Beck’s New Pollution and Chemical Brothers’ Let Forever Be. In fact, I remember someone mentioning before that Beck’s Pollution was the “90’s version” of Tomorrow Never Knows. Are there any more songs you can think of?
Another example: REM’s It’s The End of The World is the “90’s version” of Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues because they share the same lyrical structure.
“We Didn’t Start the Fire” is also often compared to “Subterranean Homesick Blues.”
I’ve seen Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” compared to “Happiness is a Warm Gun” because both songs were created by just combining song fragments.
If I understand correctly, the OP is asking us to trace influences on subsequent songs in rock, rather than just the derivatives of a sinble Beatles song.
If that’s the case, thnen I submit the amazing Bo Diddley riff, based on the old “shave and a haircut … six bts.”
Songs that use the riff include:
Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
Mona - Bo Diddley, Quicksilver
Willie and the Hand Jive - The Johnny Otis Show. Cliff Richard, Eric Clapton
I Want Candy - The Strangeloves, Brian Poole & The Tremeloes, Bow Wow Wow
Who Do You Love? - Quicksilver, George Thorogood, Juicy Lucy, The Jesus & Mary Chain
Not Fade Away - Buddy Holly, Steve Hillage, Rolling Stones, Trout Fishing in America
Get Away - Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames
How Soon Is Now -The Smiths
Heartbeat -Gloria Jones
Hey Little Girl - Dee Clark
Faith - George Michael’s (nice variation)
Desire - U2’s (modified)
Magic Bus -The Who (modified)
She’s the One - Springsteen [Not sure]
Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
1969 - Iggy Pop, Joey Ramone, Ever After
Veteran Cosmic Rocker - The Moody Blues [Not sure]
No One to Run With - Allman Brothers Band. (modified)
Panic in Detroit - David Bowie (highly modified)
Billy Bones and the White Bird - Elton John
Get Up and Go - The Go-Go’s (modified)
Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness) - Donovan, Eric Burdon & The Animals
(Slightly modified)
Wildflower - The Cult
I originally wanted just songs similar to the Beatles tune but this is getting more interesting. Thanks, Hometownboy.
