Installing overhead lighting—lighting calculator/help on the net?

I’m installing a handful of overhead fluorescent fixtures in the basement to light a woodshop and a planting area. There’re a few corners, odd shapes and a protuberance or two. I could wing it, but since it’s a week or two between times I can work down there, I have a lot of thinking time on my hands.

I’m assuming that there are known levels and guidelines for these sorts of things. As in a 4’ T-8 fixture with two bulbs will create a rectangular cone* X*’ wide by Y’ long at a height of Z. I’m assuming there are also guidelines for how far apart you want them to avoid blinding brilliance, shadow pockets, etc.

I get that there will be some variance (e.g. unfinished concrete floor v. white tile), but general help would be great. What I’d really like is to find some sort of Flash/HTML5 calculator of sorts that will help with trying out different orientations, numbers, etc.

Is there anything close?

You want a photometric analysis tool. Unfortunately, they cost some cash. I’m an electrical engineer and I do a lot of lighting, though. If you want to post a sketch of the area and how many lights you’re thinking, I can probably whip up a photometric calculation for you.
