Installing SATA in an old beige G3 Mac

So I’ve got an 300 MHz Beige G3 minitower, a SATA card from Sonnet, and a Western Digital SATA hard drive. I’ve upgraded to MacOS X 10.2.4 (about as high as you can go with this machine). When I start up the machine with the card in place, no problem – it boots to the OS from the original SCSI drive, recognizes the card, etc.

When I start up with the new drive plugged into the card, it won’t boot – kernel panic, even though I’m not trying to boot to the new drive.

Mac forums haven’t helped – I know this hardware is compatible with my system, I’ve zapped the PRAM and changed the PRAM battery.

Any clues, folks?

Do you have the latest sonnet drivers.

It might be better idea to sell the sonnet card and get a SATA USB enclosure.

Thanks, astro; I had checked the Sonnet page, and I’m not sure the updated drivers apply to my card, but I think I’ll contact them to be sure.

I’m not sure I can use a USB external – I want this to be the boot disk for a Linux install, which will be hard enough.
