Insurance Battles

Why do insurance companies refuse to pay for permanent birth control such as a tubal ligation or vasectomy?
Would they rather pay the 10 grand for delivery of a baby plus the next 18 years of health services?!?!?!

Hush, Renton_Ivr. Perhaps it is just giddiness at finding such a great site as this?

As to the OP, my guess is that most people that have the money and want to take precautions will do so, regardless of whether the insurance company will pay for it or not. And also, birth control pills work pretty well, and can be obtained very cheaply at many clinics.

I don’t know of any insurance company that pays for elective surgery. Are you suggesting that sterility is preferrable to fertility because it’s cheaper in the long run? By that reasoning, insurance companies should be putting themselves out of business by paying for your health care thereby causing you to live longer and require additional coverage. Pardon me if this comes off as judgemental but that’s just a little bit wacko sounding to me.

Health care is there to cover unexpected life-altering events such as injuries, illness, disabilities & births.

Now if you had asked why they don’t cover those surgeries when they do cover birth control pills, you might have somethnig there.
