Insurance companies, size, "service"...

I’ve been doing some comparison shopping for car and renter’s insurance. The best deal I can get from my current provider (who does business with two or three smaller - relatively speaking - insurance companies) is $140/year more expensive than Geico. But he, of course, wants me to stay with him, so he makes the argument that he’ll be a lot better at claims service and doing the best in interests of his client than Geico.

What’s your experience in this matter, or with Geico/large insurance companies in particular? Am I getting what I pay for?

We have Geico for our car insurance, and had two claims in two weeks - the first one was a stolen car stereo and other stuff when WinkieHubby’s car was broken into, the second was my totalled car from a hit and run accident. In both cases, we saw adjusters the same day, and they were extremely professional, polite and helpful - and we had checks within 5 days of each incident. Our insurance rates did not go up at all, and in fact until we bought a new car recently have consistently gone down.

I contrast this with our experience with Erie - where it was a several day wait to see an adjuster after an accident, and then they cancelled our insurance due to “frequent accidents”, three in four years. I admit that WinkieHubby totalled a car without any outside help, but the other two accidents were not even our fault.
