Insurance sales vs. real estate sales?

Family member considering a career change. Very social person. Very active on various social networking sites. Large circle of friends in similar situations (school age kids, sports, etc). I’ve always thought he could sell ice water to Eskimos but of course I’m biased.

In your esteemed humble opinion, which profession **on average **offers the greatest chance of success and the greatest financial rewards.

Personal anecdotes appreciated and encouraged! Thanks!

Looking at the ONet, real estate agents look to be making about $40,000 a year with projected job growth in the field considered ‘average,’ about 8-14%.

Insurance sales agents make a bit more- $48,000, also with an ‘average’ projected job growth in the field of 8-14%.

If you dig around on that site, you can get more and better information, including information just for your state or the differences between ‘real estate’ agent’ and ‘real estate broker,’ etc. It’s a really good site with tons of useful information. http://www.onetonline.org/

Thanks for that link **Ca3799. ** Very helpful. Still hope to hear some real world experinces.

Assuming that you’re talking about life insurance sales, he should be careful about what products he chooses to sell. Many life insurance salespeople sell products that aren’t a good fit for the people who buy them but are very profitable to the salesperson and the insurance company. Most people don’t need these expensive policies. Selling them to friends and family is a good way to make your friends and family hate you when they find out that they have paid a fortune for insurance that isn’t as valuable as they were told it would be. Most people need term life insurance policies, which are far cheaper than the expensive products like whole life, universal life, etc., but you have to sell a whole lot of term insurance to make as much money as you do selling a single whole life policy.

There is a school of thought, a heresy from the madhouse of heresies in the ninth century, that says practitioners of both will meet in Hell, so it doesn’t matter which course you take.
