Was the need for each of these categories anticipated or did they evolve over time as need arose?
e.g. “I pit the Mods for always locking my mundane pointless threads. There should be entire forum devoted to mundane pointless Threads!”
Looking at the oldest threads in each forum, we get the following dates:

So it looks like the board started out with ATMB, CCC, and The Pit? And then added CSR, GQ, GD, MPSIMS, IMHO, and CS, in that order?
I could very well be wrong though and someone else might be along shortly to give you a more thorough (and more correct?) answer.
Evolution. The board started out as being part of the website about Cecil’s columns. That forum, plus “Mailbag” would have been the start. (Maybe ATMB as well. This has been discussed many times before, but my memory fails me.)
I like to think that when Cecil forged his plan for fighting ignorance he created a second foundation … errr… second forum that works behind the scenes in order to keep the first forum from straying too far from “The Cecil Plan”.
