Sounds to me like an artifact of the signpainter’s art. Someone, somewhere, back in the 19th century, painted a number on the side of a wagon or fire engine, and then, noticing that ladder and engine were both six characters, letterspaced the designation around it:
E—N—G—[SIZE=“7”]54—I—N—E[/SIZE]
