Interactive DVD atlas for stand alone DVD players, Do They Exist?

Does someone make a DVD atlas that one could use in their automobile?
No PC required. Just a portable DVD player or one of the ones that are commonly built into a car already. I would think this would be a rather simple undertaking, a bunch of jpeg maps and an interactive tree to find the map you need.
I can`t find anything on the internet like this, why not?
Is it possible?

This site comes close.

But it appears as though you need to purchase their equipment to use the maps.

Im looking for something that could be used in an existing DVD player with no upgrading. Or a reason why it cant be done.

I would think you would be better off with a GPS. I know they are a bit more expensive, but you can get a cheaper one that would have 99% of the roads in the US. Otherwise a paper map would be just as good and easy to use. Much simpler then a DVD set of maps. Unless you have a new idea.

Not sure if there is an idea here or not, thats what Im trying to find out.

I know that some DVDs are quite interactive with games, photo galleries, trivia, etc,. The Menu Tree Technology seems to be in place. One could navigate to a starting place and select up, down, left, or right depending on where youre headed. I believe the technology is there, but no-one seems to have designed such a DVD. I would imagine that a DVD could easily hold an entire countrys main travel infrastructure.

A GPS unit would be another device you could use but this DVD could be another option for the Wallet Restricted person.

Any thoughts or help from the late crowd??

I don’t see a technical reason why it couldn’t be done, but I suspect portable and in-car DVD players just aren’t common enough for maps on DVD to be in demand. Also, the car DVD players I’ve seen have been set up so only the passengers can see them, which is fine for watching movies but bad for navigation.

Aside from the issue of driver distraction (which is why drivers aren’t supposed to be able to see the entertainment screen), there is the issue of data and its presentation - take a look a Yahoo’s maps - scaleability (sp) alone would eat up storage pretty quickly - maybe 1 DVD could get you to the intersection of major highways, but how are you going to get to the specific address you want? Break out a paper map? Kinda defeats the purpose…

Start clicking and clicking until the right screen comes up? Using what button on the DVD player? THAT would get distracting.
