Interesting Interview with Syd Mead

For those of you who don’t know, Syd Mead was responsible for the designs for such films as Blade Runner, Aliens, and Tron to name but three of the films he’s worked on. Boing Boing did a three part interview with him (and the interviewer’s a bit annoying, I’d rather have just heard Syd talk).

Here’s the first part. In this part, they’re talking primarily about Syd’s work designing concept cars for US Steel. While its not shown in the interview, I have to think that based upon the sketches we see of Syd’s work for them, and the time period in which it was built that this taxi-cab prototype is his design.

The second part deals primarily with how he creates a design (paint on paper, mostly), but it does show some of his work on movies, Hot Wheels cars, video games and album covers.

The third part deals with his work on Blade Runner and features illustrations for scenes which never appeared in the final film, as well as things like the spinners that did. He put an incredible amount of thought into his designs, it seems.

Each interview runs about 7 minutes or so. Worth checking out if you’re a fan of his stuff.
