My week started off pretty normal. Monday was a holiday so I was able to be be a bum all day and think about how much I dreaded going to work on Tuesday.
Tuesday comes around and I go to work like any other day of the week. Early in the afternoon I go outside to take a quick break and I keep noticing helicopters hovering around pretty low not too far from work. I thought at first maybe there had been a bad accident in town and that it was a life flight helicopter until I get a better look, and realize it is not life flight because it looks a lot bigger and is a dark green color. I go back inside for my break and do not give it another thought for the rest of the day.
Five o’clock comes around, I go home and have a message on my machine from my mom asking if I knew about the “hostage situation” going on in town. Of course I immediately call her back because of couse this is some big news for our little town since NOTHING like this EVER happens here. So she proceeds to tell me that our only pharmacy in town is completely surrounded by police and SWAT team members, the surrounding roads (this is THE main road in town) have been blocked off and helicopters are hovering all around. It turns out that this is a domestic dispute between a woman that works at the pharmacy and her soon to be ex-husband. He is up there with a gun threatening to kill her and himself and won’t let anyone out of the building.
The standoff lasts until 3:00 a.m. Wednesday morning and ends with the man releasing everyone out of the building then proceeds to shoot himself in the head. Very sad ending. The police were excited though, they finally were able to use all of there SWAT equipment.
Now fast forward to Thursday evening. I take my daughter and we go over to my mother’s house to visit for a little while and see how she is doing. In the middle of our visit she receives a telephone call from one of her friends and I hear her saying “Oh my God, I would leave!” and “Ewwwww, what are you going to do?!” She finally ends the conversation and proceeds to tells me that her friend had someone digging a pond in their back yard and came across a COFFIN!!!
The coffin was only four feet long and very old. Mom’s friend told us that her house sits on what used to be a dairy farm and they think the coffin was from that time, maybe someone that used to work there. The house itself is at least 90 years old. Mom’s friend then called our small town police department to report what they had found. The dispatcher at the police department freaked out and told them not to touch anything and they were sending officers out. During this time my mom and myself go over to her friends house, since it is just down the road (remember this is a very small town ;)) to go check things out. An hour later three officers and one seargent show up to “investigate.” It was pretty funny watching them walking around trying not to get dirty and just staring down at the hole completely clueless as to what to do.
We end up leaving when it starts to get dark and before they bring up the coffin. Cut to this morning my mom calls me to let me know that county officers showed up and they finally dug up everything this morning from her yard and they are sending the remains off to be analyzed.
Turned out to be a pretty interesting week after all. Things like this never happen around here so I’m sure it will be on the front page of our only newspaper. So how was everyone else’s week, anything interesting happen?
