So I see a number of young people around the Loop looking to get you to donate to various causes. It seems very dodgy. What’s the SD on these kids and the charities they represent?
My wife looked into doing this a while ago while out of work. She even interviewed with one of the groups, but wasn’t hired.
It seemed like it was legitimate, but lousy. They are real charities. The workers are essentially hired to do exactly what you see: stand around and busk for charity. It’s a demanding position with hard quotas to meet. There didn’t seem to be much / any opportunity for ‘promotion’ since there’s basically just a few handfuls of workers and a couple organizers.
Several of these groups seem to have perpetual recruitment ads up on craigslist, which is probably how they do most of their hiring.
We have them in San Francisco too.
I’m willing to bet that the percentage of money raised that goes to the actual charity is relatively small, against, say, donating directly to the charity online.

ETA: what I can’t stand about these folks is the way they all act as if they’re my new best friend. No thanks!
