Okay I know in 90’s we had internet dial up and every thing was slow. Now every thing is faster!! But internet bandwidth hardly changed if any thing it’s got much worse.
I know many web sites, message boards and chat rooms in late 90’s had little to no ads!!
Now it seems almost every web sites and message boards have ads these days and site owner struggling to pay hosting cost fees even some of them with ads!!
I know many friends who have web sites and message boards are really struggling to pay hosting cost.
Why has a technology not improved but got worse. Even in year 2005 was not bad like it is today.
So many web sites and message boards have ads but many ads yes may ads!!! And site owner saying many times to people they may have to pay to access the web site or message board or may have to shut the web site or message board down!!
Why no technology improvements? You would think with today with better technology that web sites and message boards could be given out for almost for free.
It seems the internet is faster but the bandwidth is not cheaper and bigger. Is this problem with internet backbone is old and needs to be replaced. They are overcharging the ISP and hosting companies for bandwidth and such?
The biggest thing I hate about the internet nowadays is that there’s too many normalcools.
In the 90s and early 2000s it was a secret club for us nerds to take refuge
You have just demonstrated the law of supply and demand in action. Website hosting is priced the way it is because that is what the market will bear, same as computers or RAM or any other product. If someone could offer it cheaper, there nothing preventing them from cornering the market. The fact that has not happened means buyers are willing to pay what the market is asking; there is no reason to lower prices unless someone else does it first.
No supply and demand does dictate computers. Every year they bring out faster computers and last years computers become cheaper. We don’t bring out faster food, water and wood or other resources every year unless magically we finding new deposits every year
Computers are not static. Computer technology is evolving every year that means bigger hard-drive, more RAM, faster and better CPU and GPU so on. The experts protect this will go on to year 2020.
Intel is working on 10 nm CPU and 7 nm CPU to come out around year 2017
After that Moore’s Law starts to brake down any thing less than 7 nm would be very hard.
Many experts are saying 3D chips, 3D CPU will give us bit more time before quantum computers become reality.
Already some hard-drive being stacked together like 4TB or 8TB hard-drive not rally one hard-drive but more than enclosed .
Move to Japan or South Korea and you can down load HD movie in minutes not hours.
Biggest reason for this is the US is too big of a country ( Japan and South Korea really small thus much cheaper) US is just too big it cost way too much. It would cost too much too replace old cables, routers and switches. And that the US internet backbone is using much of the 90’s technology.
I do hear google is rolling out some gigabit internet speeds in some cities in the US but would take long time before it is in every city and all places.
It does not explain why a message board of 500 active members to 1,000 active members had little to no ads in late 90’s and message board today of 500 active members to 1,000 active members have many ads and are site owner is struggling with bandwidth.
It not like the message board has 5,000 to 10,000 active members!! Where I can see that much may be bandwidth problem.
Okay I know in 90’s we had 500 to 1,000 dial up members yet now every thing is faster!! But many chat rooms in late 90’s had little to no dickwads!!
Now it seems almost every web sites and message boards have dickwads these days and site members struggling to kick the dicks even some of them with aids!! But message chat board are TOOOO slow to tell dickwads they have not improved but got worse.
Even in year 2003 was not bad like it is today.
Why no improvements of telling dickwads to go home? You would think with today with better technology that message boards could be given out for almost for free of dickwads WHY NOT?
The number of internet users has increased and so, potentially, the number of message board users has also increased. So the cost to maintain infrastructure needs to be increased not just for a single message board, but across them all.
Conversely, the number of actual message board users may have gone down. Internet users tend to do other things online besides that. So hosting sites need to expend a disproportionate amount of resources to maintain those message boards and pass that cost on to the site owners.
Whichever one it is, it really makes no difference. Memory costs and storage costs have gone down. But your friend is not paying for that on a 1 for 1 basis. He’s paying for a service. And that service costs what it costs. Don’t like it? Find another service. Or create your own. But no one is going to charge you ten cents a month for storage - even if that’s truly what it costs - because that would make zero financial sense and be an administrative nightmare to calculate.
In the 90’s the boards were run by people as a hobby because they thought it was cool. Now 15 years later it is just not that fun to run a message board because it is no longer new and cool. It is also much more of a hassle. You have to be constantly battling trolls and spammers it is just much more of a chore to have a message board that runs nicely.
Well, there’s certainly some truth in this rant. I suspect 90% of the loading times in most web pages is the overhead of going to the ad server and downloading gifs or video nonsense. I suspect those servers are overloaded and act as bottlenecks rather than the bandwidth of the internet, though.
