Internet Security

Please can anybody shed some light on what Norton Internet Security is doing with these 2 things…?

With regard to the firewall, I have chosen only a few programs can ‘get out’ on the internet. However, I have not blocked or removed any of Symantec’s “firewall stuff” at all, and I keep getting an alert that Symantec wants to access the internet. Fine! It can, and with my blessing. But do I need to be told every single time?

Also, and much worse… System 32 is driving me mad, wanting access 2 or three times each time I log on to the net AND often twice (about 5 mins) AFTER I disconnect. Can anybody tell me what this system 32 is about? What does it do? I ALWAYS block it, and nothing bad seems to happen, but am I preventing something good happening.

BTW, other than above, and I choose when to download the updates, I have all NIS set to default.

Any answers are welcome, but please bear in mind I’m not very computer savvy and may not understand the techy stuff. Thanx.

Whenever Norton gives you an alert that something is attempting to access your computer, you are given a choice of block or permit. If you always want it permitted, there is another block to check at the bottom that states “Always perform this action” or words to that effect.

I don’t know what System 32 is.

FWIW, System32 is the folder where many Windows system DLLs and executables are stored - by default it’s something like C:\Windows\System32.

DarrenS, yes that true, but I don’t know what it means in this context.

barbitu8, no. It doesn’t give me that option for system 32, and as I don’t know what it DOES, I don’t know whether I should go all out to find a way of stopping it altogether, or allow it some access.

I run ZoneAlarm Pro and have allowed the dll32 to run a few times to see what happened, couldn’t really tell a difference. Might be a pop-up ad sort of access, but I run full ad block. Can’t hope to help, just not to hinder
