Interracial couples

Indeed, some people majorly Lost Their Shit over the mere existence of an interracial family in a commercial for breakfast cereal.

On the internet, no one knows you’re chopped liver.

Still not sure why the odd reference to “golfing buddies” was thrown in.

When I first saw that, I thought. ok, Britain.

Because in the UK you get mixed-race couples, you just don’t see them on TV.

Not like the USA, where you get mixed-race couples on TV, you just don’t see them in real life.

But this thread reminded me that my automatic impressions are out of date, because the numbers show that the number of mixed-race couples in the USA is rising steadily.

I see a mixed-race couple literally every day in real life–I’m part of one.

Obviously it varies by place, but I really don’t think inter-racial couples (I like that terminology better than “mixed-race”) are all that rare anymore. Even in suburban Indiana, where I live, we’re not the only inter-racial couple that I know of. We get the occasional look–more curious than hostile–but we’ve never encountered anyone who makes a big deal out of it.

To be fair, another inter-racial couple that I know does tell us that they’ve been subject to rude comments, having loan applications turned down, having people suddenly not want to work with them, etc. That hasn’t been the experience for my wife and I, but I certainly won’t claim that it never happens.

I don’t know where you live, but in Miami mixed-race was quite common back in the mid-90s (even more if you count couples of a similar coloring where one is Hispanic and one not); my African-American coworker whose wife changed color depending on who she was with was from Philadelphia and we worked together there in 2003 (she, Moroccan-born, was white if with him but brown if with her mother). It may be one of those things which are more frequent in urban areas or some such.

Black/white interracial couples are very common here (Maryland suburb of DC). I notice them because I’m in one.

You must not watch the same UK shows I do, because as I mentioned up thread (hyperbolicly) it seems like it is all interracial couples on UK TV. For example on Doctor Who, there have been 3 recent companions in interracial relationships–Rose, Clara, and Bill (with watergirl.) On the current (really good, IMHO) *Killing Eve *there is an Asian main character with a white husband, a white main character with an Asian wife and a white main character hoping to date a black main character. I notice them because they seem much more common on UK TV.

Cripes, it’s like nobody read down to the 4th sentence

I did, but depending on where you live I understand having the idea that interracial couples are rare - or I go “bwah?”

Four, you forgot Donna. Twice, in fact.

I live in northwest Arkansas, and see interracial couples pretty often. I also smile on a regular basis.
