Introduce Us To D&D

I’d probably be interested in it as well, if it’s anything like D&D.

To everyone who replied (Woohoo, interested parties!), Fate isn’t that much like D&D, although I’d be happy to run a D&D game if that’s what people are interested in. It’s open source, and puppygod posted a link earlier…

You can check out Fate RPG. It’s quite different than DnD, but it’s good RPG and it’s free (open game license). You can download rulebook (to use with any setting) or Spirit of the Century (Fate based complete RPG game) and try it out without additional costs.

Structure of Fate actually demands players activity in creating story, so it might be easier for first-time DM. But there is no hard rule - some people love it, some people hate it. You just have to try it and decide for yourself.

No no, I was reading the Fate site. It looks really cool. I would rather do something different than more of the same.

I’d be up for anything, I’m already excited thinking about it.
But maybe we should start a new thread rather than hijacking this one enough?

That’s a good idea. I’ve started us a new thread in which to plot.

You don’t actually need any D&D books beyond just the Player’s Handbook. I started DMing with just a 2nd ed. PHB. Of course, that meant making up monster stats, magic items, encounter tables and other esoterica on the fly, but it worked out fine for me.

Just to build on this, you don’t actually need the full 4th Edition suite at all to run the first “pre-built” campaign (the stronghold one i picked up). The quick start rules and mini-player handbook in there are pretty comprehensive.

I picked up Keep on the Shadowfell and it works fine without core books. Anyone know if H2 is out yet? I may pick it up and run a campaign, this looks really interesting (assuming the followup adventure continues the story of this one).
