We’ve all got 'em - people who should be famous, but really aren’t. Inventors, songwriters, journalists and the like are often forgotten by history… so in this thread, I invite you all to share the name and achievements of people you think should be remembered but aren’t.
Mine: Dean Mahomed. Born to a well-to-do Muslim family in Bengal, he became a Bengal Army surgeon and eventually left for Britain with his mentor/commanding officer.
Once there, he gave the Western world the two hallmarks of modern civilization: shampoo, and the Indian restaurant.
Well, his restaurant went bankrupt after two years, but it made enough of an impact that… well, if you’re a Briton, or you’ve been to Britain, you know how popular Indian food is nowadays.
The shampoo thing was something else he didn’t invent, but introduced to the West- he took a job at a “vapour massage” spa, and began mixing tinctures for scalp massage. Over time, the stuff became less hair oil and more soap- and voila: shampoo.
Your turn!
