Ionizer or not ionizer? that is the question

Hello,
I need your opinion about the ionizers. I bought an air purifier with ionizer but a friend of mine told me it was bad cause it creates ozone and that it’s dangerous for my health. Is that so??:smack:

Here’s the bad thing with ozone: it’s deadly in about a tenth of the lethal concentration for HCN.

And the good thing: you feel the stench of it in a concentration orders of magnitude lower than that.

Consumer Reports recommends avoiding ionizers because they create ozone. “While ozone in the upper atmosphere protects us from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, ground-level ozone is an irritant that can worsen asthma and compromise your ability to fight respiratory infections. We believe that air purifiers that emit even small amounts of ozone are a poor choice if someone in your household has pulmonary problems or allergy symptoms.” sub req: Best Air Purifier Buying Guide - Consumer Reports

Oddly, they also sell ozone generators for the home, a highly dubious idea.

If you replace the model, get one with a HEPA filter. Realize that there will be tradeoffs between unit size (and expense), noise and airflow.

I have good news and bad news for you.

The good news is that, while ozone isn’t all that great for your health, these things produce so little of it that they really aren’t worth worrying about.

The bad news is that these types of air purifiers really don’t purify the air.

There is a valid scientific principle behind these. If you are old enough that you remember the old CRT type televisions and computer monitors, you will probably also remember that they tended to collect dust on the screen. These types of air purifiers work on the exact same principle.

The problem is that first of all, these types of air purifiers usually don’t move enough air through them to reasonably purify any decent sized room. The second problem is that while they do remove some dust from the air, they don’t remove a whole lot. If they did, your television would have been completely covered in dust to the point where you wouldn’t have been able to watch it after about a week, and that obviously didn’t happen.

Don’t waste your money. If you want a real air purifier, get something with a HEPA filter. Even then, not all HEPA purifiers are the same. You need one with a relatively large size filter that pushes a lot of air through it. That means that it will also probably be annoyingly loud, but that’s what works. Small and quiet may be a lot less annoying, but that gets you back into the problem where it’s not moving enough air through it to filter any decent sized room.

To be honest ionizers can do more harm than good. They release ozone and irritate the lungs and actually don’t get rid of dust. Found an old article pertaining to this http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-skeptic21apr21-story.html.

I own a room air purifier which I purchased after I did some research online. I use it to counter my respiratory problem as well as get rid of the dust on my PC. The one I use is Clair BF2025 (http://go-clair.com/). This one has a new e2f filter which is patented and a notch better than the other air purifier filters available in the market. I need to replace the filters just once a year so its low maintenance and isn’t as expensive as the other air purifiers.

I suggest you stay away from ionizers and invest in a good room air purifier like I did.

Are you sure you aren’t talking about H2S?

As CR points out, officially they aren’t supposed to generate a dangerous amount. But reality intervenes. Some are cheaply made and go over the safety limit out of the box. Many others go south and start producing excess ozone. It’s just better to avoid the risk entirely.

purification units to actually do something useful are big, not a small decorator appliance.

I’d back up even one more layer than that and ask:

What are you trying to accomplish? What leads you to believe there’s something in your room air that you want to remove? What do you think that stuff is? Is there something special about you (e.g. disease, age, etc.) that makes you especially susceptible to harm from this stuff?

I suffer of allergy especially during spring and I spend a lot of time in my bedroom then I wanna have a good one
I bought this one http://www.lelong.com.my/nature-fine-at88f-home-air-purifier-ionizer-ozonizer-mosquito-repeller-86380664-2012-06-Sale-P.htm but I don’t wanna keep it anymore…
Thanks for your explanation everybody
Maybe some people can suggest me another one? without ioniser??
