iPhone 3.0 countdown.

Downloading it now!

Got it about 7 hours ago. 1st Gen iPhone. Pain free. Lotsa little neat things (check out the new buttons while playing back podcasts.)

I’m a little disappointed in the updated Bluetooth functioning. The phone still won’t push my phonebook to my car. It also won’t connect to the ipod player in my car, but I suspect that is an issue on the car’s end. I would expect the phone to be able to push my phone book though. The car sits waiting for the phone to initiate the download.

I predict you’ll be waiting a bit. I think the bluetooth improvements were limited to being able to stream stereo audio to bluetooth devices. On an up note, it’ll drop the audio of you get a call. I dunno if it extends to voice dialing, but I think that’s a 3gs feature.

Your iphone will also not perform dialysis or make toast.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think that the iPhone should be able to initiate the transfer of the phone book to a Bluetooth enabled vehicle that has the capability of storing the information on a harddrive. There are certainly plenty of other less advanced phones that can perform this task.

And that’s the problem. Just because it’s do-able, doesn’t mean they should. I’ve got a bluetooth GPS receiver, why wouldn’t they program the iPhone to use it?

There are no less than 28 bluetooth profiles. (List of Bluetooth profiles - Wikipedia) Apple has been pretty sluggish in implementing most of them.

Previous to the current version hardware, they left out voice dialing because it sucks. It’s error prone or requires training, so they left it out as ahalf-baked feature that wouldn’t work well. I can only hope it works well with the current phone. Likewise, I could see them leaving out address book functionality for a number of non-obvious reasons, not the least of which being: it didn’t work well. (Synchronization with exchange, do you include the home, mobile, beeper, but not fax numbers? How do you interface with the other end so that it works well.)
