iPhone duplicating contacts

My iPhone belongs to my employer, and the contacts are synched with my Outlook contacts. The problem I have is that for some reason it keeps creating duplicate copies of the contacts, so that I end up with 5 or so copies of every contact, which makes for an enormous amount of scrolling. And they are tedious to delete, in that - best as I can tell - you need to select each (copy of a) contact individually, go to “edit”, then select “delete contact”, then confirm that choice.

Questions: is there a way to prevent this duplication from happening? For those already created, is there a way to instruct the phone to search for and delete all duplicates? And if not, is there at least a faster to delete contacts than what I described above?

I had the same thing happening and I resolved it by changing the settings so the syncing only happened one way. In other words, the phone would copy the contacts in Outlook but not vice versa. As for cleaning it up, you could of course do this manually but if you look in the App Store, I think you’ll find dedicated apps to help with it. You do have to be careful as some of the same-name contacts may have different information in them.

I have an iPhone too. I got for free from my employer when I retired, I just take over the contract but pay their discounted price until it expires in two years.

I’m not in a good position to complain obviously due to the nice “freebie” but I have dozens of now redundant outlook contacts and the iPhone is a total POS for any simple mechanism to remove them other than one at a time.
